Mozambique, December 2024  

“As another year comes to an end, I can see that some of my dreams have been fulfilled while others are yet to be realised. Many of these dreams have come true because of the intervention of Mission Educate and Bible Society Australia,” reflects 59-year-old mother of 10, Luzia*. 

Luzia is one of hundreds of adults who are taking the opportunity to learn literacy skills and start dreaming of a better future. 

“I didn’t know how to read or write,” Luzia shares. She has been studying for five years now and has fulfilled the dream of helping her grandchildren with their schoolwork. “I have gone from being a helpless grandmother to one who is respected for her knowledge. This year, I took the government exam and passed it successfully!” 

 This is not the only dream fulfilled by the project, however. Through the life skills component of the course, Luzia received short-term training in gardening, cooking, and baking. With a great sense of achievement, Luzia explains, “Because of this training, I am now setting up a small business while also providing for my family.” 

Luzia’s future dreams hinge on the next step of her education. In 2025, she is attending 7th grade at a government school. “I am so happy!” she exclaims. “Because of Bible Society, I have completed my primary education and am now going to secondary school at my age of 59!” 

“It is hard to say goodbye to the Literacy for Life project, especially because of the empathy and support given to each person. I will carry it in my heart forever.” 

As Luzia goes into this next phase of her life, she is petitioning God on behalf of Bible Society Australia, and our incredible supporters who make this transformational work possible. “I ask God to continue blessing the Bible Society Australia for all they do to transform lives in Mozambique.”
